MAVRI Physician-Researcher Joint Appointments (University/Hospital)
About the program
The aim of the Physician-Researcher Joint Appointments program is to increase the number of physician-researchers in Israel as part of a general effort to enhance and expand high-quality and long-standing biomedical research activity. The Call for Proposals (CFP) targets physician-researchers who have demonstrated outstanding research abilities, and who are interested in combining a high-level research career with significant clinical work in hospitals. The Program will include up to five submission cycles, from 2024 to 2028, via which Israeli public research universities can win financial support for the employment of the Physician-Researcher. The conditions of employment are such that the Physician-Researcher must hold at least 50% position at a university, and a 50% position at a hospital, to secure adequate time for research.
Eligibility
The Call for Proposals is open to Israeli public research universities for submitting candidates. The submitting university must commit to employ the candidate at the level of at least 50% faculty position for at least five years. Each public research university may submit up to two candidates per submission cycle.
Candidates must be physicians who have completed residency and are employed at a hospital (at least 50% position), and who have training and/or significant proven experience as a principal investigator (e.g., publications, grants, etc.). The submission of candidacy is contingent upon the candidate’s pursuing “the standard academic path” (and not the clinical path), and the candidate’s future recruitment at the university (in the year following the award notification.
Financial Support:
- A research grant of NIS 250,000 per year for three years, with the possibility of extension for another two years (subject to an in-depth assessment of achievements at the end of the first three years).
- A one-time equipment grant that can be used for upgrading an existing laboratory or for establishing a new laboratory, up to a maximum of NIS 2.5 million. The procured equipment/laboratory will be situated at the hospital or at another site approved by the Evaluation Committee.
Applications for this program are handled by the Strategy and International Affairs Department at the PBC.
The Evaluation Committee will evaluate candidates according to criteria of research excellence.
Deadline for submission: July 15, 2024.
